Chapter Five

“At least now we know how Mateo planned on making his money.” Christian sat behind his desk, his arms crossed as he stared at Zeus. “But you’re not one hundred percent sure that it was the ancient god who escaped from hell.”

Stretching his legs in front of him for comfort, Zeus shrugged. “Hell if I know. Dorm’s mate, Bobby, said he felt pure evil when he was in the same room as that drug lord. And when he was attacked by those Hell Hounds, they had mentioned Mateo’s name—said the ancient god had marked Bobby.”

“And he’s built a drug cartel for two years. I know that name,” Christian said. “Amidio Castañeda has taken over the East Coast and strikes terror in many hearts.”

There was a knock on the door before Nazaryth entered. Zeus sat there and filled the man in on what he knew so far. They hadn’t had time to talk when the Winged Beast had come to his house yesterday.

“I had my men check out Chavez’s place in California,” Nazaryth said. “It was definitely Mateo. His scent was still lingering behind, but he’s long gone, and they can’t find where he is.” The man turned to Zeus. “And you say this ocelot shifter was marked?”

Zeus nodded.

“Then he’ll be coming to Pride Pack Valley. When an ancient god marks someone, he uses that person to sustain his life here on earth. He is going to drain Bobby’s life force in order to replenish his human body.”

Zeus frowned. “Why would Mateo choose Bobby? He has plenty of men in his organization, plenty of people he can drain right there at his fingertips.”

“Shifters sustain his life longer,” Nazaryth answered. “He probably figured out what Bobby was before the bloodbath and had marked him. Mateo more than likely figured Bobby wouldn’t get away. But now that he’s marked the guy, he has to finish the process before he becomes too weak and returns to hell. We just have to keep him from getting his hands on Bobby.”

“How?” Zeus asked. “My men are damn good, but we’re talking about a god.”

“He’s going to stay with me,” Nazaryth said. “My men will protect him until Mateo returns to hell.”

“And what will stop Mateo from breaking free again?” Christian asked. “How do we ensure he stays put?”

“It will take him hundreds of years to gain the strength back to even attempt an escape. There’s not much we can do to make sure he doesn’t come back, but at least we’ll have a few hundred years without him.” Nazaryth glanced at Zeus. “My men are heading toward your house now to retrieve Bobby and his mates.”

Zeus gave a low growl. “You could have warned me.”

“I just did.” Nazaryth stood. “I’ll keep you both informed of anything I find out. But you might want to tell Deputy Varnes’s supervisor that he’s taking a long vacation until the situation resolves itself.” He stopped when halfway to the door and asked, “Did Bobby see the shackle on Mateo’s ankle?”

“He didn’t mention any shackle,” Zeus said.
